The “barrel scene” in The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug is one of the more energetic sequences of the film. However, the book version of the event (as is true in most cases) is much tamer. The dwarves and hobbit simply get in barrels and float to safety, enclosed inside them. No orcs, no fighting, no elves in pursuit, almost no action. While this may seem more boring, this is simply another instance of Jackson padding out the story to fill three movies with action scenes, and yet another change to make Tolkien roll over in his grave.
