Tolkien fact 24 – Aragorn a.k.a. Estel

[Originally posted on March 26th, 2015]

Aragorn (technically Aragorn II) was adopted by Elrond of Rivendell at a young age after his father was killed by orcs. His true identity (as a descendant of Isildur) was hidden, even from him, and he was given the name Estel, meaning Hope in Elvish. In Rivendell, he made good friends with Elrond’s sons and often went out hunting orcs with them. When he was 20 years old, he came back from a hunt and Elrond revealed his true name and identity to him. The same day, he also met Elrond’s daughter Arwen (who had previously been living in Lothlórien). The rest of that story is history.
