Tolkien fact 20 – Frodo’s “Coming of Age”

[Originally posted on March 22nd, 2015]

Not only did Bilbo and Frodo share the same birthday (Sept 22nd), the birthday celebrated at the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring is significant for both of them. It is not only Bilbo’s 111th birthday but also Frodo’s 33rd birthday, though not mentioned in the movie. The 33rd birthday was a “coming-of-age” number for young hobbits, as they generally lived longer than most people do today. Adding the two numbers up gives you 144, the number of people Bilbo invited to the special tent at his party for his speech and ‘trick.’ (This is referred to as one gross, but generally not applied to people, being seen as disrespectful.)
