Many who are familiar with LotR probably recognize a map of Middle-earth. But did you know there was an entire section of the continent that was buried under the sea at the end of the First Age called Beleriand? It was drowned when the gods of the West (the Valar) finally came and fought with, destroyed, and banished the first Dark Lord, Morgoth (Sauron’s boss, basically). This picture shows how the two maps approximately line up. The majority of The Silmarillion (the book covering the mythology of LotR) takes place in Beleriand.
